end of a Canucks era

Trevor LindenYesterday Trevor Linden announced his retirement from hockey. He’s a great guy not just in the hockey world but in the real world and I hope he keeps his strong ties with the game (preferably with the Canucks organization) and with the community. I’m sure he counts Vancouver as home so I doubt the latter will be an issue.

He was never my favourite player and I’m not really sure why. I love defensive forwards and players that seem like they’re great people and he’s both. I guess you can only have so many favourite players and I had 3 favourite Canucks for the longest time - Mattias Ohlund, Brendan Morrison and Matt Cooke (who’s now a Capital). For some reason it makes me feel good that Linden mentioned both Ohlund and Morrison (of the few specific players he named) in his press conference, as though that lends credence to the high regard I hold them in.

In any case, Linden will forever be remembered as the heart and soul of the Canucks. Fans won’t ever forgive the travesty of him being traded away but are always thankful we got him back in the end, and we’re probably most thankful that he led the team the closest they’ve ever been to the Stanley Cup. Damn the ‘04 New York Rangers.
